The New Normal

Coastal cities are key to humanity's future. Today, 2.4 billion people or 40% of the world's population lives in coastal cities, and by 2050, projections point to an increase of over 50%. This entails great challenges: coastal cities grow at unprecedented speed, creating or exacerbating social and environmental problems such as, inequality, biodiversity loss, pollution, plastic waste, and water and food scarcity, which are all amplified by the—rapidly, changing Climate. It is precisely in the coastline where the impacts of a variable climate hit first and hit the hardest. It can also become our first line of defense, the places where we build resiliency.

The scenarios for coastal cities are increasingly complex, they require new paradigms and solutions. Local innovation, connectivity, emerging green economies and technological developments are guiding the collective responses to global challenges through the articulation and amplification of the impact of networks, therefore, Cities need to be able to rethink radical solutions that are intergenerational, perpetuity, low carbon, nature-based, equitable, resilient and driven by circular economies, effective governance, collective action and the involvement of citizens.
